How do I have an old coin or banknote valued?
Our experts make this straightforward for you. A valuation requires specialist knowledge – identifying the type, assessing condition, determining rarity and gauging market demand. We offer a free, non-binding consultation for buy-back or auction consignment; written expert appraisals and valuations are issued for a fee. We draw on current auction results and will always give you an objective view on sale or investment.

How do I obtain a written expert appraisal?
If you need an official document – for example for probate or divorce proceedings, or as confirmation of value – we can issue a written expert appraisal. This is a standalone A4 document setting out our experts' opinion (Ing. Veselý alone has more than 40 years of experience). It is used for objective assessment in situations that do not require direct NGC or PMG certification. The appraisal fee starts at CZK 3,000 and it is issued only after an in-person inspection of all items; if you subsequently sell through us, the fee is offset.

Will I get more at auction or via buy-back?
That depends on the type and rarity of the item. For rare and highly collectable pieces, auctions can deliver markedly higher prices thanks to competitive bidding. On the other hand, cash buy-back offers immediate payment and zero risk. It is always best to discuss the specific item with our expert and we will recommend the most advantageous route.
How do I have an old coin valued?

Our experts in numismatics and notaphily can streamline the process for you. We provide professional identification and appraisals of coins and banknotes backed by many years of experience in both fields.

Valuing an old coin requires specialist knowledge and involves several steps:

1. Identification of the coin. To value the piece we need to determine the type, issuing authority, variant and where it was struck.

2. Condition: assessing the state of the coin is critical. Some very rare coins in poor condition carry minimal value, while a common coin in beautiful condition can be highly collectable.

3. Rarity: especially with modern coins, value depends on mintage. With older coins, rarity is judged from market availability.

4. Historical significance: certain coins are tied to important historical events – examples include the "legionary" denarii of Mark Antony or the strikes of the Bohemian Estates uprising of 1618–1620.

5. Market demand: value is also driven by current collector demand.

AUREA Numismatika offers identification and valuation of coins, medals and similar pieces.

How do I have an old banknote valued?

The process for valuing an old banknote is similar to that for coins:

1. Identification: establish the basic facts – country of issue, year of issue, denomination and series.

2. Condition (grading): the state of the note is essential. Cleanliness, the absence of tears, stains and other damage are all assessed.

3. Rarity: find out how many examples were issued and how scarce the note is on the market.

4. Historical significance: events tied to the note can raise its value.

5. Market demand: value is also influenced by current collector demand.

How can I find out the value of an old coin?

There are several ways to establish the value of an old coin:

1. Consultation with an expert: a numismatist can give you precise information about the piece and determine a realistic market price.

2. Auctions and market prices: tracking auction results and market prices for similar coins gives you a sense of value.

3. Catalogues: numismatic publications often estimate approximate values for coins and medals; reliability depends on the age and place of publication.

AUREA Numismatika offers expert valuations and consultations to help you determine the value of your coins.

How can I find out the value of an ancient coin?

Determining the value of an ancient coin involves the following:

Take one of the most widespread ancient Greek coins as an example: a tetradrachm of Alexander the Great. First, authenticity must be confirmed. Next, the type has to be identified – where and when it was struck. Many variants of this coin exist, struck both during Alexander's lifetime and after his death, and some are far more valuable than others. Finally, market value and collector demand for that specific type need to be established.

Our firm specialises in valuing and selling ancient coins. Get in touch for more information.

How does coin valuation work?
Coin valuation works as follows: the coin is examined by our expert, who determines authenticity and condition. The metal, historical value, state of preservation and other factors all play a role. The expert then identifies the type more closely and its specifics, and on that basis sets a realistic market value. Market value is most often based on the metal value or on documented sale prices in the market.
How does banknote valuation work?

Banknote valuation involves:

1. Hand-over: the note is handed to a notaphily expert.

2. Condition assessment (grading): the note is carefully examined and graded.

3. Identification and research: the expert identifies the note and researches its history and rarity.

4. Setting the value: based on grading, rarity and market prices, a value is set.

5. Certification: where useful, the note can be certified.

What is the procedure for buying back coins?
Coin buy-back works as follows: a numismatic expert receives the coin, identifies it and then values it. Based on the valuation we agree an offer for the coin, and once agreed the amount is paid out by your preferred method — in cash up to the statutory limit, or by bank transfer sent immediately. Enquiries sent by email or through the form usually receive an offer the same day, within two working days at the latest. The purchase contract can now also be signed electronically, so the whole buy-back can be handled remotely.

What is the procedure for buying back banknotes?

The buy-back procedure for banknotes is similar to that for coins:

1. Hand-over: the note is handed to an expert.

2. Valuation: the expert values the note.

3. Offer: based on the valuation, an offer is made.

4. Payment: once agreed, the negotiated sum is paid out.

Which coins are the most valuable?
Pinning down a coin's rarity in a sentence is not easy. There is a range of coins struck to mark significant events or by significant people, which drastically raises their value. Condition matters too: even a relatively common coin in exceptional state can be highly valuable. Errors of striking and the size of the mintage also push prices up. For some types, value derives largely from the precious-metal content.
Which banknotes are the most valuable?

The most valuable banknotes include:

1. Rare historical notes: issued in limited quantities or with historical significance.

2. Error notes: notes with a printing error.

3. Notes with unique serial numbers: low or special serial numbers.

How much will I get when selling coins? Do you have a buy-back price list?
The buy-back price depends on the metal, rarity and condition. For bullion pieces it follows the current precious-metal price; for collector coins the year and grade decide — which is why rarer coins carry a price range rather than a fixed list price. We will quote your items free of charge: just send photographs via the form on the buy-back page.
Will you come to collect a collection from us?
As standard, buy-back takes place at our shop, or remotely after you send photographs. A personal visit to a collection is possible by individual arrangement — typically for larger estates or long-standing clients. A visit and on-site valuation carry costs, which are borne by the client if no purchase takes place.
