How do I invest in gold and silver coins?
Start with a goal, a budget and an investment horizon. Standard investment coins – for instance the Krugerrand, Wiener Philharmoniker or Maple Leaf – trade chiefly on metal content, purity and the current gold or silver price. Purity varies: the Krugerrand is struck in 916.7/1000 gold, while the Wiener Philharmoniker and Maple Leaf are 999.9/1000 fine. Historical and collector coins are judged differently: condition, rarity, provenance and collector demand matter. A one-ounce coin has a lower entry cost than a large bar or ingot, but when comparing the price per gram, always watch the premium over the metal price.
How do I invest in gold coins?
With gold coins, focus on purity, weight, liquidity and the premium over the current gold price. For a purely investment purchase, well-known and easily traded coins make sense; with historical pieces, collector value is added to the metal value, based on condition, rarity and the market. When comparing a coin with a bar, look not only at the total price but also at the price per gram and at the buy/sell spread.
How do I invest in silver coins?
Investing in silver coins is similar to gold. Silver coins can be more attractive thanks to their lower price, and a much wider range of types and designs is struck. Mintage matters: some limited strikes can sell well above the bare metal value.
Which are the best investment coins?
Among the most popular and most liquid are the world-famous Krugerrand from South Africa, the American Silver Eagle from the USA, the Canadian Maple Leaf and the Austrian Wiener Philharmoniker. We carry a wide range of these on our site.
Which are the best investment banknotes?
Investment banknotes are usually rare, well-preserved pieces with historical or collector value. They include rare issues of older banknotes and limited series of modern notes. For specific recommendations, please reach out to our notaphily experts, who will be happy to advise.
How are investment coins valued?
On the basis of several factors. The first is the precious-metal content and purity (most investment coins weigh one troy ounce, 31.1 grams, with a purity of 999/1000). There are also modern investment coins struck in smaller mintages, which lifts them above the value of the metal alone.
How are investment banknotes valued?
Valuing investment banknotes covers condition, rarity and historical significance. The factors weighed include the state of the paper, sharpness of print and any damage. Certification companies such as PMG grade banknote condition on the Sheldon scale of 1–70. For a professional banknote appraisal we offer certification services in partnership with reputable institutions.
Modern collecting
Modern collecting covers coins and banknotes from roughly the 20th century onwards. Such coins and medals are well documented in catalogues, so collectors focus on individual years and mints. Many modern collectors target coins struck in limited mintages. Our auctions and online shop carry a wide range of modern collectables.
Modern notaphily
Modern notaphily focuses on collecting and studying banknotes issued in recent times. Collectors judge notes not only on denomination but also on design, history and limited availability. Our notaphily experts can advise you on which modern notes carry potential for growth in value.
How do I find the value of a ČNB commemorative coin?
For ČNB commemorative coins the issue, mintage and finish (standard vs. proof) decide — catalogue prices can differ considerably from the market.
