Montenegro

Montenegro is a state on the Adriatic coast of the Balkans; a theocratic principality of prince-bishops (1516–1852), a secular principality 1852–1910, a kingdom 1910–1918, then part of Yugoslavia and since 2006 an independent republic.

History

Its only king was Nicholas I Petrović-Njegoš (prince 1860, king 1910–1918), the father-in-law of Europe, whose daughters married into the Italian, Russian and Serbian dynasties. Independence was recognised by the Congress of Berlin in 1878; after the First World War the monarchy was deposed and the country joined Serbia.

Currency and coins

Its own currency was the perper (1 perper = 100 para) from 1906 to 1918, tied to the Austrian crown: nickel 1, 2, 10 and 20 para (1906, 1908, 1913–1914), silver 1, 2 and 5 perpera (5 perpera = 24 g, .900, 1909–1914), gold 10, 20 and 100 perpera (1910, for the 50th year of the reign and the coronation; 20 perpera = 6.78 g, .900). Coins were struck at the Vienna mint, later Paris. Today Montenegro uses the euro.
