Josef Stehlík

Josef Stehlík was a Czech medallist of the first half of the 20th century, known from the numismatic record chiefly through an award medal of Czechoslovak trade institutions. His biographical data could not be verified in the available sources.

Life and work

The catalogue dates 1895–1935 under which the artist is listed in the range are not documented in verifiable sources. The 2019 Aurea Numismatika auction catalogue gives only a general dating to the first half of the 20th century. Searches under this name lead mainly to other persons – above all the fighter pilot Josef Stehlík (1915–1991) and the sculptor and stonemason Josef Stehlík born in 1944 – with whom the medallist cannot be identified. Further details might be found in Toman's New Dictionary of Czechoslovak Artists or the abART database, which were not checked for this text.

Coins and medals

Josef Stehlík's medallic work is documented by the undated bronze medal Recognition of Work and Merit, issued by the Czechoslovak Trades Centre and the Czechoslovak Academy of Trades. In interwar Czechoslovakia these institutions brought together and represented small entrepreneurs and craftsmen; the award medal was conferred for services to the trades. Medals of this type occur mainly in bronze and without a date, so their dating rests on the period in which the issuing institutions were active. No catalogue of Stehlík's work is known.

From the work in the AUREA range

The AUREA range includes his undated bronze medal Recognition of Work and Merit – Czechoslovak Trades Centre, Czechoslovak Academy of Trades, catalogued to 1930. It is the principal known evidence of the artist's work to date.
