It is the process of assessing the condition of coins and medals by independent experts (for instance NGC). The process covers authentication, condition (the Sheldon scale 1–70) and sealing the coin in a permanently sealed plastic holder (slab) with a unique reference number. This guarantees originality, protects the coin from damage and makes it easier to trade.

Banknote grading is a similar process to coin grading, focused on assessing the condition of the note. Factors include the state of the paper, sharpness of print, presence of stains, tears and other defects. As with coins, we work with the internationally recognised company PMG, which grades banknotes on the Sheldon scale of 1–70.

We photograph the coin with you, draw up a contract and personally take it to the NGC office in Munich. The experts authenticate the coin, grade it on the standard Sheldon scale and seal it into a slab with a unique certification number and security features.

NGC grading starts from 900 CZK for standard coins with a value of up to €300. The price depends on the market value of the coin, the metal and any historical origin (for example ancient coins). The whole process takes roughly 3–6 months. Our current price list is available via the link below.

This is a standalone A4 document setting out our experts' opinion (Ing. Veselý alone has more than 40 years of experience). Determining the value of an ancient coin involves the following:

Take one of the most widespread ancient Greek coins as an example: a tetradrachm of Alexander the Great. First, authenticity must be confirmed. Next, the type has to be identified – where and when it was struck. Many variants of this coin exist, struck both during Alexander's lifetime and after his death, and some are far more valuable than others. Finally, market value and collector demand for that specific type need to be established.

Coin buy-back works as follows: a numismatic expert receives the coin, identifies it and then values it. Based on the valuation we agree an offer for the coin, and once agreed the amount is paid out by your preferred method — in cash up to the statutory limit, or by bank transfer sent immediately. Enquiries sent by email or through the form usually receive an offer the same day, within two working days at the latest. The purchase contract can now also be signed electronically, so the whole buy-back can be handled remotely.

The buy-back procedure for banknotes is similar to that for coins:

Pinning down a coin's rarity in a sentence is not easy. There is a range of coins struck to mark significant events or by significant people, which drastically raises their value. Condition matters too: even a relatively common coin in exceptional state can be highly valuable. Errors of striking and the size of the mintage also push prices up. For some types, value derives largely from the precious-metal content.

The most valuable banknotes include:

1. Rare historical notes: issued in limited quantities or with historical significance.

2. Error notes: notes with a printing error.

3. Notes with unique serial numbers: low or special serial numbers.

For bullion pieces it follows the current precious-metal price; for collector coins the year and grade decide — which is why rarer coins carry a price range rather than a fixed list price. A personal visit to a collection is possible by individual arrangement — typically for larger estates or long-standing clients. Start with a goal, a budget and an investment horizon. Standard investment coins – for instance the Krugerrand, Wiener Philharmoniker or Maple Leaf – trade chiefly on metal content, purity and the current gold or silver price. Purity varies: the Krugerrand is struck in 916.7/1000 gold, while the Wiener Philharmoniker and Maple Leaf are 999.9/1000 fine. Historical and collector coins are judged differently: condition, rarity, provenance and collector demand matter. A one-ounce coin has a lower entry cost than a large bar or ingot, but when comparing the price per gram, always watch the premium over the metal price.

With gold coins, focus on purity, weight, liquidity and the premium over the current gold price. For a purely investment purchase, well-known and easily traded coins make sense; with historical pieces, collector value is added to the metal value, based on condition, rarity and the market. When comparing a coin with a bar, look not only at the total price but also at the price per gram and at the buy/sell spread.

Investing in silver coins is similar to gold. Silver coins can be more attractive thanks to their lower price, and a much wider range of types and designs is struck. Mintage matters: some limited strikes can sell well above the bare metal value.

The most expensive lot in our history was the extremely rare 10 Ducat 1620, Prague–Škréta (Frederick of the Palatinate), sold in 2022 for an impressive 10,255,000 CZK. Other big records include the 10 Ducat of Ferdinand II (6,660,000 CZK), the 5 Ducat 1938 (6,120,000 CZK) and from the modern era the legendary 5 Heller 1924, which sold for 1,550,000 CZK.

The oldest coins in the world emerged in Asia Minor, in modern-day Turkey. In the territory of ancient Lydia, around the 7th century BC, gold coins were struck from a metal called electrum (an alloy of silver and gold). The coin shows a majestic lion's head facing right with an open mouth. The striking of these coins was driven by the growth of trade in Asia Minor. Comparably old are the Chinese pre-coinage tokens known as "spade money", cast from bronze, made in the shapes of objects such as a knife or a key.

Among the most valuable historical coins is the Flowing Hair Dollar of 1794, sold in 2013 for more than ten million dollars, or the Brasher Doubloon of 1787. Prices of such coins can reach tens of millions of crowns. Their rarity and price flow from a compelling historical story behind the striking. The most valuable historical banknotes include the 1,000-dollar bill of 1890 known as the Grand Watermelon, which sold for more than three million dollars. The most popular coins are those tied historically to our country. They include modern Czech Republic strikes and coins from the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic and the First Republic. A large share of collectors also focuses on the Habsburg period, when the dynasty ruled our territory with breaks between 1526 and 1918. Equally interesting and rich is medieval coinage, dominated by the striking of the Prague groschen (1300–1547) and the denarius (10th to 13th centuries).

Collectors in the Czech Republic often pursue notes from the First Republic, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, and the Czechoslovak era. Banknotes from the Austro-Hungarian period are also popular.

In notaphily, banknotes with historical significance, error prints and limited editions are popular. Interest is also growing in banknotes from developing countries and in special issues.

There is a wide range. In simple terms, coins can be divided into circulation coins (those actually used in daily commerce), commemorative coins (struck to mark an event) and investment coins (covered above; they are generally struck from metals of high fineness, commonly 999.9/1000 for gold). Coins should be distinguished from medals: a coin has an assigned or stated denomination, whereas a medal is a purely artistic object without a denomination and was not used for payment.

Banknotes can be divided into circulation notes, commemorative notes, error notes and limited editions. By issuer, a further distinction is made between banknotes (issued by a central bank) and state notes (issued directly by the state). Each type has its own collector value.

Common First-Republic years of the St Wenceslas ducat (3.49 g of gold, fineness 986/1000) trade in the tens of thousands of crowns. Rare years from the late 1930s reach hundreds of thousands to millions. Year, grade and provenance decide — we offer exact attribution as part of our appraisal services.

Common Prague groschen of John of Luxembourg or Charles IV can be had for a few thousand crowns; the ruler, strike centring and condition decide. NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) certification is a process in which independent experts verify the authenticity, quality and condition of a coin or medal. The coin is then placed in a plastic holder (slab) that cannot be opened without damage. The slab displays information about the coin and its grade. The grade is given on the Sheldon scale from 1 to 70, where 70 denotes a perfectly preserved coin. Each holder carries a unique certification number that can be looked up in an online database.

PMG (Paper Money Guaranty) certification is a similar process to NGC certification, but for banknotes. Experts assess authenticity, condition and quality, and the note is sealed in a protective holder with a unique certification number. More information is available on the PMG website.

To obtain NGC certification, the coins need to be brought to our shop. Our specialists will assess whether the coin is suitable for certification and estimate the likely cost. All you need for hand-over is an identity document; we remain responsible for the coins until you collect them again. We cannot guarantee NGC turnaround times or the final grade. We then send the coin to NGC, where the grading itself takes place. Turnaround is typically 3–6 months.

The process for PMG certification is similar to NGC. Banknotes are brought to our shop, where our specialists assess them and forward them to PMG.

Assessing a coin's authenticity involves several steps, which can include the following:

1. Visual inspection: examine the coin under a loupe or microscope. Look not only at the faces but also at the edge, to spot damage or traces of mounting.

2. Weight and dimensions: weigh the coin. Gold has a density of 19.3 g/cm³ and silver 10.5 g/cm³, so a marked deviation in weight at the correct dimensions gives a counterfeit away. Historically, coins were struck to a defined coinage standard with a fixed weight. Dimensions matter especially for modern coins, struck automatically, which should match one another precisely.

3. Magnet test: some counterfeits are magnetic, while genuine coins are usually not. Gold and silver coins in particular should not react to a magnet.

4. Expert appraisal: the best way to verify authenticity is to have the coin assessed by an expert or a certification company such as NGC.

Assessing a banknote's authenticity can involve:

1. Visual inspection: check the note for watermarks, security features and microtext.

2. Ultraviolet light: some notes have security features visible only under UV.

3. Touch analysis: genuine notes have a specific texture and a particular firmness of paper.

4. Comparison with a reference: compare against a known authentic example of the same type.

5. Expert appraisal: the best way to verify authenticity is to have the note assessed by an expert or a certification company such as PMG.

The best coin holders are those that offer maximum protection and keep coins in the best possible condition. When looking for coin holders, focus above all on products labelled PVC-free or museum grade. 1. Coin capsules: these plastic capsules offer individual protection for each coin. 2. Albums with rigid pages: albums with transparent pockets allow safe storage and easy viewing. 3. PVC-free sleeves: free of PVC and plasticisers, so they will not react chemically with the metal and cause damage.

For protecting banknotes the best sleeves are: 1. Acid-free plastic sleeves: protect notes from chemical reactions that could damage them. 2. Albums with protective films: such albums allow safe storage and viewing of notes. 3. Archival sleeves: specialist holders designed for the long-term storage of valuable paper collections.

Alongside the popular ten-crown pieces there are genuine legends. The 5 Heller 1924 is the rarest circulation coin of all, sold at auction for more than 1.5 million CZK. Then there is the 10 Crown 1933, the silver "phantom" of the First Republic, of which only a handful of examples escaped melting. Also highly valuable are the nickel 5 CZK 1937 and the 25 Heller 1932.

Our bimetallic fifty-crown is regarded as one of the most beautiful coins in the world. While the 1993 issue is entirely common (more than 35 million struck), there are years with fewer than 30,000 pieces struck, which have considerable collector potential.

The rarest years are: 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002 and 2003. If you come across one, watch the condition. An unscratched coin in mint lustre is worth many times more than a circulated example.

Many people believe that the ten-crown coin with the motif of the Prague Astronomical Clock from 2000 is rare. The opposite is true. This millennium coin was struck in a huge mintage of 10,000,000 pieces, is commonly found in circulation and is worth exactly 10 CZK.

The real rarity from 2000 is the ten-crown coin with the classic motif of St Peter's Cathedral in Brno (Petrov). It was struck only for collector sets, in a mintage of just 30,000 pieces. If you find a Petrov dated 2000 in your wallet, you are holding a valuable coin. Both varieties were struck by the Czech Mint in Jablonec nad Nisou.

This special variant was made as a trial striking in a limited mintage of just 1,000 pieces. On the standard ten-crown coin a line passes through the letters "Kč" roughly in the middle. On the rare "small Kč" variant the lettering is more delicate and the line crosses the letters much higher up.

This unique coin can fetch six-figure sums at auction, in contrast to the standard 10 CZK 1993, of which 70 million are in circulation.

Photographs and detailed identification points

1. Rarity: notes issued in limited numbers or with unique features are often more valuable. 2. Historical value: notes with historical significance or tied to important events can carry higher value. 3. Condition (grading): the quality and condition of the note plays a major role. Notes without stains, tears and with minimal wear are more valuable. 4. Serial number: notes with unique or low serial numbers (for example 000001) can be highly prized. 5. Printing errors: notes with mis-printing such as inverted images or missing design elements can be very attractive to collectors. 6. Authenticity: authenticity is essential. Counterfeit notes have no collector value.

There are several ways to identify gold: 1. Acid test and spectrometer: a common method in which gold is tested with special acids that react only with gold of a given purity. The spectrometer examines a sample of the precious metal using X-rays. These react with the atoms, which then emit secondary radiation. From this radiation the instrument measures the purity of the metal in the item. Some spectrometers are limited to a range typically of 400–700 nm. 2. Weight and density: gold has a specific density (19.3 g/cm³) that can be measured. 3. Hallmarks: genuine gold jewellery and coins often carry hallmarks confirming their purity. These mark jewellery and re-strikes from the second half of the 19th century onwards; marks from the 18th century and earlier are rarer. 4. Magnet test: gold is non-magnetic, so if the item is attracted to a magnet, it is unlikely to be gold.

To determine the authenticity and value of a gold coin, several aspects need to be considered: 1. Weight and dimensions: each gold coin has a specific weight and a set of dimensions. Deviations may suggest a forgery. 2. Purity: gold coins are usually 24 ct, 22 ct or 21.6 ct; traditional ducat gold has a fineness of 986/1000. 3. Hallmarks: some modern gold coins and re-strikes bear hallmarks confirming purity and origin. 4. Sound test: genuine gold coins have a characteristic ring when tapped gently on the edge. The tone should be long and clear. Tin coins, by contrast, produce a dull, short sound.

As with gold coins, silver coins can be verified in several ways: 1. Weight and dimensions: silver coins have specific weights and dimensions that should match the official figures. Pure silver has a density of 10.49 g/cm³. 2. Purity: historically the purity of silver coins varied widely. For medieval coins purity is therefore not a reliable indicator. 3. Hallmarks: usually found on medals from the 19th century onwards. On coins they appear only rarely. 4. Sound test: silver coins give a clear, ringing sound when tapped gently on the edge, much like gold. 5. Magnet test: silver is non-magnetic, so the coin should not be drawn to a magnet.
