Mongolia
Mongolia is a landlocked state in East Asia between Russia and China; for centuries under the Manchu Qing dynasty, it declared independence in 1911 (the theocratic monarchy of the Bogd Khan), became the Mongolian People's Republic under Soviet influence in 1924 and has been a parliamentary republic since 1992.
History
Until 1921 Chinese and Russian money and silver ingots circulated; after the revolution of 1921 and the death of the Bogd Khan (1924) the second socialist country in the world arose. In 1990 a peaceful democratic revolution took place.
Currency and coins
The currency is the tugrik (tögrög, 1 tugrik = 100 möngö), introduced in 1925. The first coins of 1925 were struck at the Leningrad mint: copper 1, 2 and 5 möngö, silver 10, 15, 20 and 50 möngö and 1 tugrik (20 g, .900) with inscriptions in Mongolian script and the soyombo. Dates are given in the Mongolian era (year 15 = 1925, 27 = 1937); copper-nickel from 1937, aluminium from 1959. Commemoratives from the 1970s; today also plentiful gold and silver collector issues.
